What is it

What is a remote desktop server?

A remote desktop server is a Windows Server that hosts a complete desktop environment — files, applications, settings — which your team accesses over the internet. Instead of every staff member having their own copy of files and software on their personal computer, everyone connects to one central server and works from the same Windows desktop.

It's the modern replacement for an on-premises office server. No box humming away in the corner of the office, no air-conditioning bills, no panic when hardware fails on a Friday afternoon. Just a Windows desktop your team can reach from anywhere — at the office, from home, from a tablet on a building site.

Microsoft calls it Remote Desktop Services (RDS). The technology has been used by enterprises for two decades; what we do is package it as a managed service that small and mid-sized Australian businesses can actually afford and use without an internal IT team.

How your team uses it

A remote desktop server feels exactly like using a regular Windows PC — because it is one, just hosted somewhere else.

  • Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop app on any device
  • Log in with your username and password
  • Your Windows desktop loads — files, apps, email, all there
  • Work as you normally would. Save files. Print. Send emails.
  • Log off — your session ends, but the server keeps running
Built for

The Australian businesses that benefit most.

If your business runs Windows software and your team needs reliable access to shared files and applications, a remote desktop server replaces a lot of complexity with a single managed platform.

Accounting practices

Run MYOB, Xero, QuickBooks and Reckon on a server that all staff access from anywhere — without sending file copies back and forth or struggling with version conflicts.

Construction & trades

Drawings, contracts and project files in one place. Office staff manage from desktops, site teams access from tablets — everyone always sees the latest version.

Engineering & design

AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks and other heavy applications run on the server's CPU and RAM — not on the user's local laptop. Your design team gets workstation performance from anywhere.

Legal & professional services

Sensitive client files stay on a controlled, Australian-hosted server with role-based access — never on personal laptops or USB drives. Compliant, audited and backed up.

Multi-site businesses

Two offices, three branches, ten remote staff — they all connect to the same server. No more emailing files between sites or wondering which copy is current.

Hybrid & remote-first teams

Staff working from home, partners overseas, contractors on the road — all using the exact same Windows environment, with the exact same files, every single time.

Hosted vs on-premises

Why a hosted remote desktop server beats a server in your office.

An on-premises Windows server is a major capital purchase that needs replacing every 3-5 years. It needs power, cooling, a UPS, physical security, network configuration and someone capable of looking after it. When the hardware fails — and eventually it does — you're down until parts arrive and someone rebuilds it.

A hosted remote desktop server moves that whole problem off your premises. The hardware is in a tier-3 Australian data centre with redundant power, cooling and networking. We handle the maintenance, patching and backups. You pay one predictable monthly fee instead of large irregular capital outlays plus ongoing IT labour.

  • No hardware to buy, replace or dispose of
  • No server room, no air-conditioning bills
  • No emergency callouts when hardware fails
  • Predictable monthly cost — no five-year refresh cycles
  • Scale up or down in minutes as your team changes
  • Australian data sovereignty — your data never leaves the country

FAQ

Common questions about remote desktop servers.

What's the difference between a remote desktop server and a regular cloud server?

A regular cloud server might host websites or databases — typically used by developers and IT teams. A remote desktop server hosts a full Windows desktop environment that real people log into and use day-to-day. It runs MS Office, your accounting software, your industry-specific apps — everything your team uses on a normal Windows PC, just hosted in a data centre instead of sitting in your office.

Is a remote desktop server the same as RDP?

RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) is the protocol — the network technology used to connect to a remote Windows desktop. A remote desktop server is the thing you connect to using RDP. So when people say "RDP server", "RDS hosting" or "remote desktop server hosting", they're talking about the same product: a hosted Windows server you log into remotely.

How is this different from using a VPN?

A VPN connects your device to your office network — you still need a physical computer running your software, with your data on it. A remote desktop server replaces that physical computer entirely: the apps run on the server, the data lives on the server, and your local device is just a window into it. You can use a remote desktop server from a tablet that has none of your business software installed locally, which a VPN can't do.

Will my line-of-business software work on it?

Almost always yes. Standard Windows applications — accounting software (MYOB, Xero, QuickBooks, Reckon), CAD tools (AutoCAD, Revit), industry-specific platforms, ERPs and CRMs — run identically on a remote desktop server. You supply the licence; we install the software for you as part of onboarding.

How fast does it feel? Is there lag?

On a decent home or business internet connection, the experience feels essentially identical to a local Windows desktop. RDP is highly bandwidth-efficient — it transmits screen updates rather than full video, so even mid-speed NBN connections deliver a snappy experience. Heavy CAD work and video editing remain responsive because the actual computation happens on the server, not your local device.

Where is the server physically located?

All Remote Server infrastructure is hosted in Australian tier-3 data centres. Your data stays in Australia at all times — important for businesses dealing with privacy obligations, government contracts, or simply preferring data sovereignty.

What happens when something breaks?

Server monitoring runs 24/7. We typically detect and resolve hardware-level issues before users notice. Software issues are handled by raising a support ticket. Your business data has a 30-day full server restore window plus 90-day file recovery — so even worst-case scenarios are recoverable without data loss.
